Hear Jon's Tribute to Ted

Jon brought along the file he's kept for years.  In it, he's jotted down notes from every meeting he's had with Ted over the years.  He shared some salient quotes from Ted - "Excellence honors God."  Ted's closest confidant through the years was Dorothy.  Jon suggests that any leader who can not say that might want to reconsider his fitness for leadership.  "I don't believe in giving up," says Ted.  His model is Churchill.

Chair/CEO, Mission America Coalition

Paul reminisced over more than fifty years of friendship.  From the early days, Paul's commitment to evangelism ran parallel with Ted's.  When Paul became Senior Pastor at Lake Avenue CC, Ted soon emerged as a confidant and supporter.  "Ted is every pastor's dream leader - positive, supportive, winsome and encouraging.  A genuine Barnabas," said Paul.

Gordon also knew Ted as a lay leader at Lake Avenue.  During Gordon's  years as Senior Pastor (Paul's predecessor), Ted remained a constant source of encouragement.  They met regularly.  Ted frequently took the microphone in sometimes contentious congregational meetings bringing perspective and hope that brought unity of purpose and forward momentum, Gordon said.

Mike Vessey

Financial Advisor*

Mike's family ties with Ted go back to his childhood, when the Engstrom family moved into the neighborhood.  Ted had just left his position as President of Youth for Christ to join Bob Pierce and World Vision in the early 1960s.  As a result of the open door, and Ted's clear witness, Mike's parents made a life-changing commitment to Jesus Christ.  Mike followed.  And ever since, Ted has been a mentor and friend.

Pastor Adult Ministries

Richfield Community Church

Dr. Ted and I began our monthly meetings fifteen years ago. Dr. Paul Cedar invited Wally Norling and me to meet with the Board of Lake Avenue Congregational Church. That’s when Ted told me about his new book, The Fine Art of Mentoring. At the time, I was an eager businessman who had once been a pastor. I approached Dr. Engstrom, wondering if I might get some of his valuable mentoring time. Initially, I guess, I just hoped something of Ted’s “success” might rub off on me. He graciously agreed to take that time, one on one. What happened over the next few years could easily fill a book. What I learned from those long conversations wasn’t quite what I had anticipated. As Ted got hold of my business mind, God got hold of my heart. Today, I have happily returned to pastoral ministry. We continue to meet regularly. I sold my business. My wife Carolyn and I miss Dorothy (who also became a wonderful friend) dearly.

* Sadly, several of the tributes were missed on tape.

The Letter from Dr. Dobson for the Sons of Barnabas gathering -

June 5, 2006

Dear Friends:

It is a privilege for me to have this opportunity to pay tribute to my dear brother, Dr. Ted Engstrom. To call him one of the wisest, most godly men I know sounds like hyperbole, but it is no exaggeration - it is an accurate assessment of his character.

Dr. Ted's impact on the ministry of Focus on the Family - and on me personally - has been profound. Many years ago, when Focus was just getting off the ground, and at a time when I had very little experience in overseeing a non-profit organization, he came alongside me as a mentor and advisor. Much later, as Focus grappled with the challenges and uncertainties of expanding its outreach beyond the borders of the United States, Dr. Ted gave us a much-needed challenge to "take the plunge." We followed his advice, learning a great deal along the way from his own expertise in the arena of international ministry, and as a result, God has used Focus to impact the lives of 220 million people per day in countries as far-flung as South Africa, the Ukraine, Costa Rica and Egypt.

And Dr. Ted's influence on Focus on the Family continues still. He may be 90 years old, but his energy and enthusiasm for the Lord's work are infectious. I truly believe that his role as the voice of godly wisdom and real-life experience on our Board of Directors over the years has been one of the key factors in making the ministry of Focus on the Family what it is today.

I'm thankful to Dr. Ted for his friendship, and for his consistent example in living out what Jesus called the greatest commandments: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength," and "love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:29-31).

We congratulate Dr. Engstrom on this occasion, and thank the Lord for his life, well-lived!

Sincerely,

James C. Dobson, Ph.D. Founder and Chairman
